Robert D. E. Rice, M.D.
After 38 years practicing Ophthalmology, Dr. Rice announced his retirement as of Friday August 19th, 2022. He will be greatly missed.
Dr. Rice is current with the latest ophthalmology practices and exciting new treatments. He specializes in the use of laser technologies to most effectively treat the many forms of glaucoma. Dr. Rice is also skilled at new surgical techniques to restore vision after cataract surgery, resulting in much less dependency on eyeglass correction.
Dr. Rice is Board Certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member in good standing of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the New England Ophthalmological Society.
A native of Washington D. C., Dr. Rice pursued an undergraduate major in Philosophy and pre-medical studies at Clark University in Worcester Massachusetts. He then returned to Washington and earned both a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and his M.D. degree at Georgetown University.
Dr. Rice’s year long Internship in Medicine at the Washington Hospital Center was followed by a three year Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
During his residency, Dr. Rice developed a major interest in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. He was privileged to be the first doctor to take a Glaucoma Fellowship with Dr. Robert C. Allen, a pioneer in the medical and surgical treatment of Glaucoma.
